Shade & Shadow: Basic Shapes
BasicsShading can be a bit tricky at first but its not as difficult as it seems. The picture to the right shows a light bulb and several geometrical shapes; circle, triangle, cylinder, and a square.
You'll notice that one side of the shape is light and the other is darkened. All you need to know or keep in mind is just that. What the light doesn't hit, it is darkened. In this example, all you have to do is picture the light source and the object which is being hit by the light -- which part will the light hit? How far will the light go?
You also have to ask yourself where is the light source coming from? If the light is far above, the shorter the shadow is (try checking out your shadow at noon - 12:00 PM) whereas the lower the light, the longer the shadow will become. According to the light source, make your shadow fit accordingly.
Good thing to remember also: what is the shape of the object I'm giving a shadow?Each of the shapes in the picture each have their own unique cast. The triangle has a pointy shadow, the circle has a circular shadow, the cylinder has a rectangular shadow, and the cube has a "L"-like shadow. At a different angle, though, the cube will cast a different shadow shape. For instance, if the light was head-on to one of the flat sides, it will cast a square to rectangular shadow depending on the light source's height.
With that in mind, you also need to remember: what is the shape of the object the shadow is falling on top of? The current example only has a flat surface on which the shadows fall but in most cases, shadows of - say a character - will fall on rocks or on water, which will look different compared to each other.
Tips to keep in mind:-The darker the shadow, the brighter the light source.
-As the shadow is drawn further from the object, the lighter it becomes.
Drawing the ShadowThe shadow takes on the shape of the item it comes from. If you look to the example picture to the left, you will see various shapes and their shadows being cast. Notice that to make the shadow, all you have to do is create a triangular shape from the top of the object to the ground and back to to the base of the object.
The cube is a bit more complicated as there are two and in some cases, three triangles you have to draw when at an angle.
Drawing the shadow on the ground, I drew in dotted lines to indicate the shape of the shadow - which is basically the same shape as the object itself. Again, you'll notice that the cube does its own unique cast as indicated at the bottom example. It forms an "L" type shadow.
Shading
Shading on an object usually starts midway into the object as shown on the cylinder, cone, triangle, and cube. The circle is also shaded midway but considering that it is round, the shape of the shading also becomes rounded! The result is something quite like an eclipse. Note: Shadows depicted in example image are intentionally drawn entirely dark for tutorial purposes.

Light Source and Shadow The shape of the shadow is also affected by the light source. When the light source is from anything but the sun, like a light bulb, the shadow widens the further it is from the object. The sun, meanwhile, casts a "straight" shadow in that it remains true to the objects shape.
More Than One Light Source A shadow is made for each light source present in a scene. If you are inside a room, for example, and there are two lights on, you will cast a shadow from each light source. This is shown on the right-most example.
Notice both of the bulbs are at the same distance and height from the object. This fact causes the shadows from both light bulbs to be the same. When the light sources are from different distances and heights, the light source that is closer to the object gives off the darker shadow.
Looking at the example again, note that the area where the two shadows meet is darker than the one shadow itself. Dark + Dark = Darker. Keep this in mind when drawing groups of people who's shadows happen to overlap and intersect each other.

Applicants have to fill the application online and upload the image files of their Photo and Signature in JPEG format and other documents in PDF format. How to Apply?
TO GET YOUR APPLICATION FORM:A) For General Category:
The application form may be downloaded from www.nid.edu website. The completed application forms may be posted to NID/handed over physically with supporting documents and Demand Draft of Rs. 1,500/- drawn on any nationalized bank in favour of ‘National Institute of Design’ payable at Ahmedabad.
Incomplete or incorrectly filled application forms or forms not satisfying eligibility criteria or forms without required fees will be rejected.
Those applying for two disciplines must send two separate application forms along with two separate sets of documents. Any application form not accompanied with set of relevant documents will be rejected. The application form fee ( Rs. 1,500 / Rs. 750) for rejected applications will not be refunded. No official communication will be made regarding rejected application forms.
B) For Reserved Category:
The application form may be downloaded from our website admissions.nid .edu. The completed application forms may be posted to NID/handed over physically with supporting documents and Demand Draft of Rs. 750/- drawn on any nationalized bank in favour of ‘National Institute of Design’ payable at Ahmedabad. The applicant should also send in an attested copy of the relevant reserved category certificate from competent authority.
Attested copies of Caste/Category Certificates required from Reserved Category Candidates: Reserved category candidates must attach relevant certificates of Caste/ Category as per the Government of India rules/format, otherwise the application form will be rejected.
OBC (Other Backward Class) candidates are required to submit non-creamy layer certificate from Collectorate. PH (Physically Handicapped) candidates are required to submit certificate from the Chief Medical Officer (minimum 40% disability).
Hall Ticket/ Call Letter will be posted by December 10, 2012.

Admission is on the basis of NID’s method of selection, which extends beyond the students previous academic qualifications. The NID Admission Committee systematically seeks evidence of the perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation essential for a challenging and satisfying design career.
The objective of the tests and the interviews is to ascertain the above qualities. Design Aptitude Test (DAT) shall be conducted at various centres. Based on the scores obtained in these tests, candidates will be shortlisted and called for the second phase. The second phase of the admission procedure will consist of studio tests followed by personal interviews at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar.
Call letters for the second phase of the admission procedure will be posted by Monday, March 4, 2013. This information will also be available on NID’s website . All those candidates called for the second phase are required to attend the studio tests and interview, which completes the process of selection.
The Admission Committee decides the procedures, grades and weightage every year. The norms for the selection are the sole prerogative of the Admission Committee and the decision of the Admission Committee and the Management in any of the matters concerning the admission process and selection will be final.
Any direct or indirect attempt to influence the admission committee or its members, academic office bearers or management will lead to the automatic disqualification of the candidate(s)

- GDPD Hall Ticket (both copies) duly filled in with recent photographs.
- Attested copies of SSC & HSC marksheets (those who are studying presently in HSC, must submit bonafide certificate from the school/ college).
- Attested copy of relevant certificate indicating Date of Birth (Upper age limit as on 1st June, 2013 is 20 years for General category– Relaxable by 3 years for Reserved categories).
- Attested copy of relevant Caste/Category certificate issued by competent authority for SC/ST/PH/OBC non-creamy layer candidates wherever applicable.
- PGDPD Hall Ticket (both copies) duly filled in with recent photographs.
- Attested copies of marksheets of SSC, HSC, completed years of Graduation and Degree certificate / Provisional certificate / Passing certificate (those who are studying presently in final year of graduation must submit bonafide certificate from the college).
- Attested copy of relevant certificate indicating Date of Birth (Upper age limit ason 1st June, 2013 is 30 years for General category– Relaxable by 3 years for Reserved categories).
- Attested copy of relevant Caste/Category certificate issued by competent authority for SC/ST/PH/OBC non-creamy layer candidates wherever applicable.
